Program Description

Music Education in the Arts Education Program prepares students to teach music in K-12 general classroom settings. Experiential learning is highlighted in music education courses, as students:

  • develop reading and composition skills in music
  • develop listening, singing and conducting skills
  • learn to play and improvise on a variety of musical instruments
  • study and apply music education philosophies and teaching strategies (examples include Orff, Kodaly, and Drumming Circles)
  • explore and utilize a wide variety of music education resources
  • develop thematic planning skills and the ability to integrate music within all strands of the Arts Education curriculum

Students pursuing a career as a secondary band or choral teacher are advised to also investigate learning opportunities within the Bachelor of Music Education program.
